Tadcaster 10 Road Race This annual ten mile road race was started in 1983 and had been run during May every year until 2003 when it was decided to discontinue the race. In addition a fun run of about 2.5 miles was held earlier on the race day. Pictured opposite: Runners cross the bridge over the River Wharfe having covered the first mile during the 1999 "Tad 10" |

The Tadcaster 10 followed a route starting from the entrance of the Bass Brewery on Station Road
following Station Road to the Junction with Leeds Road, turning sharp left down Leeds Road and
through the Town Centre passing the John Smiths and Samuel Smiths breweries. The bridge over the
River Wharfe was crossed at one mile where the course rose up York Road and headed out of the town
in an easterly direction reaching the end of the second mile by Lawton's Ford Dealership Garage.
After a few hundred yards along the cycle track of the busy A64 dual carriageway a left turn took
the race northwards onto the peaceful Catterton Lane passing the three mile mark before winding
to a 'T' junction close to the village of Catterton. Here a left turn took runners away from
the village to follow the undulating lane past the four mile point and up the rise into the
village of Healaugh, passing the first drinks station.
Bearing left at the junction with the road from Askham Bryan and through the village the road
sweeps left near the church and past the five mile half-way point. The course then dropped and
went round to head southwards past New Buildings Farm on the left and the six mile point, rising into the village of
Wighill where the second drinks station was located outside the White Swan Pub, just before the
seven mile marker. A brisk rise took the course past the church on the hill and the junction with the
road to Thorp Arch Estate and then dropped through farmland along Wighill Lane past the eight mile
point, re-entering the town just before the nine mile marker. The last mile returned the
runners to the junction with York Road where the race turned right back down the hill and over the
bridge, crossing the end of Kirkgate and turning right up Chapel Street. Bearing left past the war
memorial the finish was reached outside Magnet House and the Sports Centre on Station Road.
