Sunday 18th December - PECO Cross Country League: Race 2

The second PECO race for this season took place at Temple Newsam on Sunday.

The weather forecast was not great with freezing temperatures and the threat of snow. The number of runners completing the race reflected this with 936 runners (compared to 1700 for the first race).

The course this year was identical to last year’s and included the ‘water feature’. Listening to the runners afterwards, it was not as eventful this year as it was last year….. however I am awaiting photo evidence of this! No doubt these photos will appear at next years Annual Dinner!

Abi Carter was the sole representative for the Tadcaster Harriers ladies again and finished in a time of 40:31 to take 99th place out of 304 runners.

Dave Baxter was first male Harrier across the line with a time of 31:29 to take 82nd place out of 412 runners.

Tom Derry also ran in this race (but representing his first claim club, Wetherby Runners) finishing in an excellent time of 29:41 to take 43rd place.

Sunday 28th November - PECO Cross Country League: Race 1

The first cross country race of this winter took place at Middleton Park in Leeds.

Including the junior runners there were over 1700 athletes who took part on this muddy and technical course. Although there are no long or steep hills, the terrain and undulating nature of the course made it hard going. The recent poor weather also resulted in the course being muddy and slippy in places. The weather gods were kind on the day though with the morning being dry and quite mild for this time of year.

Abi Carter was the only Tadcaster Harrier lady taking part and in a field of 365 ladies, she came home in 135th position with a time of 41:41

First Harrier home in the mens race was Dave Baxter with a time of 31:44 giving him 95th place in a field of 478 runners.

First lady overall was Eve Whittaker of Harrogate Harriers & AC with a time of 30:43

First Male overall was Benjamin Douglas of Hyde Park Harriers with a time of 26:25

Saturday 5th November - God's Own Backyard Ultra

Georgina and AJ took part in God's Own Backyard Ultra on Saturday.

"Competitors set off on the hour every hour to complete the 4.167 mile loop. They must complete the loop within the hour to enter the next hour. All competitors will DNF until the last person to finish a loop by themselves is crowned the course champion."

AJ and Georgina both completed 15 full laps - equivalent to just over 100km.

Last year's Endure 24 event at Bramham Park took place just as all restrictions for Covid19 had finished.
As a result we only had one team of eight runners in the event (and seven solo runners).
This year we returned to pre-pandemic levels of interest and had 5 teams entered, one solo runner and other club members who were part of one of the sponsor's (Heineken) teams.

However most of the teams were affected by illness, injury or team members not being able to run for personal reasons, so two of our teams finished up being a team of five and a team of six.
A big thank you goes to Paul Storr (who is an ex Harrier) who was supporting Andy Mason's solo effort, but offered to help out and run a few laps for one of the teams.

The weather was perfect for running. We didnt have the blazing heat from 2019, nor the thunderstorms from 2021. In fact the only bad weather was on the Friday when we were setting up the camp!

One talking point from this years event was one of our team names. Jo Millican's team name was 'Fanny Lane Flyers'. Clearly inspired by the popular street name where we do a lot of hill training. However, the compere at the event refused to announce the team name when a team member passed through the finish barrier.
Jo raised this with him and he stated that it was a family event and he didn't want to say it! Anyway, when Sue Tindall finished the final lap, the compere stated he had checked it out and it is a street name in Tadcaster and agreed to announce the team name!

There were some great performances from club members, with some team members doing 5, 6, 7 or 8 laps over the 24 hours and some excellent finish positions for the teams which is great considering we went there to have an enjoyable social weekend with a bit of running thrown in!.

Thanks to everyone who was involved in making the event a success for the club.

We will be letting your legs recover a bit before we see who is interested for next year.

Sunday 23rd January - PECO Cross Country League: Race 4

The last time a PECO league race was held at West Park in Leeds (in the days when Corona was an alcoholic beverage) there was a storm of biblical proportions with rain, sleet, hail, thunder, lightning and locusts (by all accounts). So, Sunday's dry but chilly weather was comparatively tropical!

The undulating 4.5(ish) mile course weaved around the park and playing fields before heading into a wooded area near to the Leeds University. The field near the finish was muddy enough to see one or two runners loosing their shoes and finishing barefoot with shoes in hand!

First home for the Harriers Ladies was Jo Derry with a time of 37:56, with Glen Johnson in the mens race with a time of 32:36

Well done also to Tom Derry with his time of 31:56 in the senior mens race and Gail Jamieson's son, Max, for finishing the junior race with only one shoe!

Alice Leake (Leeds City AC) was first home (301 finishers) in the Ladies event for the fourth time in this years league with a time of 29:02. Meanwhile Benjamin Douglas (Hyde Park Harriers) was first home in the senior mens race (428 finishers) with a time of 25:55. Full results can be seen here.
